The Kampung

My internet is not working at home again...we are now on vacation for the end of Ramadan. The Government could not decide which day Idul Fitri would fall on, but finally decided it would be on Wednesday...good news for us because that means no school on Thursday!!

Kids Are The Same No Matter Where You Are

One thing that I notice when doing "Photo Walks" is that no matter where you are in the world, kids are the same...rich, poor, Asian, European, American...doesn't matter...kids are kids...

Photo Walk A Success

On Saturday, I led a photowalk in Jakarta. We had about 30 people show up to take photos. It was a blast, and I think people walked away from the walk with some good photos, and a new and better understanding of the community we all live in together. Most expats living in Jakarta rarely venture outside the comfort of their homes, work and the mall to see the "real" Jakarta. A Photowalk into the Kampungs of Jakarta can be a real eye opener to what life is really like in this city.

One of my favorite shots from the day is below...it is sad, but I think it speaks volumes...

Part 1: The Job

Happy Friday!!

Here is Part 1 of my Photo Essay...the last part (or the first part)...you can now see the entire essay by starting here and scrolling down.

I am taking a large group to Northern Jakarta for a photowalk tomorrow...will post some photos next week...have a great weekend!!

Part 1: THE JOB

The trucks arrive with trash...

A man waits for the trucks...

The truck arrives, and people rush to find their plastic or other treasures...

Most collect plastic...they are paid about 4 US cents per Kilo of plastic...

bags of plastic are weighed near the top of the trash mountain...

Men write down the weights of the bags of plastic...

Part 3: Where They Live

I am trying something new on this blog...

I visited the Jakarta Dump again this past weekend. I thought it might be cool to do a "photo essay" on what I saw and experienced while there. Since the blog posts are done with the current day first, I will start with "Part 3" today, and then do "Part 2" on Wednesday, and "Part 1" on Friday. After Friday, you can just scroll down to see the entire essay...

After visiting the dump, and climbing the mountain of trash, we went to the neighboring "kampung" (village) where all the trash pickers live. Most all of the houses were made from the trash found in the dump. Even the clothes and shoes the people wear were found in the dump...

"WHERE DO THEY LIVE?"

Repairing and Destroying

I am leading another Jakarta Photowalk in a couple of weeks. This photo was taken the last time I was up in Sunda Kelapa. I find it interesting how much work and effort it takes to keep these wooden schooners painted and in good repair, yet the garbage around this area continues to grow...seems like nothing is done to clean up the water these big boats sit in. I have to admit, though, that the garbage kind of enhances this photo...I don't think it would be near as interesting without it...but...well, you know...

Sometimes beauty can be found in old dying trucks...

Singapore MRT

You have to go to terminal 2 at the airport in Singapore to catch the train to the city. On the way down to the MRT (the subway), I saw this long corridor...I love this kind of perspective shot where things seem to go to infinity. This is a hand-held 5-shot HDR...

Science Museum, Singapore

Happy Friday!! Don't you just love Fridays? I especially like them now that I am back to work again. You know you are having a great vacation when you lose track of what day of the week it is...but now, it is all so clear...today if FRIDAY!!

I thought I would enter this photo into another week of Skywatch Friday which I contribute from time to time...

Have a great weekend!!

Some More Old Trucks

Piggy backing on my post from Monday, here are a couple of more old trucks I saw while driving in the hills of Tennessee...They were sitting next to a house that looked empty. I wanted to ask permission, but nobody was home, so I spent about 20 minutes shooting the two old Mack Trucks...in the middle of my shooting session, an old dog wandered over to me to check me out...I guess he thought I was ok...no barking or even a growl...just a look on his face that said, "what ARE you doing?"

La Jolla

I used to live right near La Jolla, California when I was flying helicopters for a living...it was great to get back to this beautiful little spot. When the rest of the country was suffering a heat wave, the temps in La Jolla were in the mid 70's...ah, so nice...

Where Old Trucks Rest

I sometimes wonder how many of these old trucks are hanging around in their resting place...I spotted this beauty in Tennessee and immediately pulled off the road to get some photos. It was actually behind a barbed wire fence, and there was a lady outside trimming the bushes. I asked her if I could step inside the fence to take some photos of the truck, and she denied me and told me I could only take photos from the other side of the fence...that limited my angles, but I managed to get a few shots...
