Flying Through The Blue

I love sea turtles...they are so graceful in the water, and have such a laid back personality. If you saw the movie, Nemo, they portrayed the turtle's personality perfectly...

I absolutely love your underwater photography (and above water), being an avid diver, it's something I'd love to get into. I was wondering if you could give more specifics on how you got this shot. How far away were you? What did the original look like? Did you use a strobe? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Good gracious, man. You never cease to amaze me when I come here.
And I loved the way they portrayed the turtles in that movie.

Thanks all...

David...to answer your questions...

I took this shot with my 10.5mm lens, and with that lens, you must be VERY close to your subject or everything appears to be very far away and small. Therefore, I was less than a foot away from the turtle when I took this shot. He was swimming away from me, so I had to fin kick like mad to keep up with him. I didn't even look through my viewfinder when I took the photo..I just stuck my camera as close to the turtle as I could and fired. I use two Nikonos SB105 strobes set shooting outwards (full power) with strobe arms extending almost 2 meters wide (from strobe to strobe).

For this particular shot, very little was done in PS. I did a color balance adjustment layer (added more reds and magenta as those colors are quickly lost underwater), and did some sharpening...that's it..the original did not look too much different from this one...I also added the vignette to bring the viewer into the turtle...

Hope that helps...

Cheers,

Scotty
