Skywatch Friday - Mount Merapi Sunrise

A few months ago, scientists thought that Mount Merapi was going to blow big time, so I flew down to central java to get some shots of the possible eruption. It never came, but we sure got a nice sunrise...

Have a great weekend!!

Wow! I guess that shot was worth the flight by itself.

I've never seen a volcano erupt. Once I lived near an on-and-off active one. If it would have been erupting, I would have seen the glow from my window. It did not. It did right after I left. But never smoke while I was there. This one is fantastic.

Scotty: Timing is everything with volcanoes and you captured this well. I was near one in Costa Rica when it did this and it smelled like sulfur.

What a glorious shot and light, really magical.
Except for the filth, I loved the way the fish eye draws the composition of the next one together.

I guess it's a good thing it didn't erupt since it would have spewed more pollution into the skies, but I'm sure it was a disappointment. Great sky photo. though!

Man what a shot!!!!! Incredible. Worth the trip I would say, even if you did miss a (hoped for?) eruption. Thanks for sharing. Hope you will stop over to my place to see my contribution. More stark -- a first effort with SkyWatch. Cheers!

Oh my, this photo is absolutely stunning. I just showed it to my husband. His ship sailed through your part of the world in 1974 on its way from Hong Kong to Australia. He said it is one of the most beautiful places he's ever seen.
